The 7th Legion primarily represents social action and solidarity to advance the aims of the humanitarian supranationalist movement in specific localities and domestic platforms. It is impossible to understand the role of the 7th Legion without first taking account of that of the Global Equinox Agenda. Synthesis’s grassroots strategy to advance its aims and aspirations consists of two primary aspects: community development and social action.
Community development is an essentially cooperative process based on the idea of mutual interest between specific public and private actors as well as civil society. It is essentially a “do-it-yourself” process involving members constructing parallel systems and organizations to serve their own interests rather than marshalling themselves to alter the policies of entities outside their direct sphere of power. This is essentially Global Equinox’s role: the promotion of cooperative relations between civil society, the public sphere, and the private sphere. 7th Legion, however, represents social action. This means taking an adversarial approach toward other entities in society with whom the interests of the humanitarian movement supposedly conflict.
Whilst the GEA concerns itself with building solidarity specifically between civil society but broadly between all social actors, 7th Legion concerns itself with influencing and if necessary co-opting primarily state power but broadly any kind of existing power structure toward the agendas set out by the humanitarian movement. This includes the promotion of social solidarity between individuals and groups who are victims of power inequalities or inhumane treatment to exert and disrupt the powers that be while forging a stronger and stronger movement against generically all kinds of social injustices.
7th Legion essentially has 3 main roles: unifying civilians and societies for the protection of transnational human interests, organizing protests and other subversive (but non-violent) actions against flagrant violations of humanitarian principles, and promoting social education and organization to counter the powers of governance and affirm the control humans have over their own destinies.
The first role manifests itself in the form of Synthesis’s policy against all forms of civilian loss in wartime and entrusts the fight against such inhumanity to 7th Legion because it recognizes that the change must come about in the superstructure of international relations. Also, that this change must be coerced from and conceded by governments after extensive collective action. Synthesis as a whole is orientated toward bringing about the installation of a humanitarian vanguard at the superstructure of politics but 7th Legion partakes in the here and now by taking preventative measures and building social independence from governments that are not reliably stable so society can be protected.
The second role manifests itself in the avocation of the broad aims of Synthesis and bringing social actors to advance these agendas in local communities on the understanding that all humanistic organizations and individuals will benefit from a sovereign power acting in their interests and the interests of humanity as a collective.
The third role involves the promotion of government by consent and forming a greater civilian participation in public life by advocating forms of direct democracy and other means of making governance more interactive with society so that government and society may eventually become one unified, self-governing human community rather than being two separate mutually alienated entities. This takes form at first in the promotion of a greater social check on government power by organizing society to partake in public life.
